Naked Triple

Hard Used by Smart Hint

Three cells in a row or column whose candidates combine to exactly three heights — eliminate those heights elsewhere in the line.

1 2 2 3 1 3 1 2 3 4 3 5

How it works

  1. No one of the first three cells is pinned down, but between them they draw on only three heights: 1, 2 and 3.
  2. Three cells, three heights — they take one each, so all three are spoken for.
  3. Strike 1, 2 and 3 from the rest of the row, settling the last two cells at 4 and 5.
  4. The three cells don't need identical candidate lists — only their union has to be exactly three heights wide. That's the difference between spotting this and missing it.
